The artwork was painted in the early days of the war. My grandmother is an ethnic Bulgarian born in Ukraine, it is her homeland and her land. Her family of prosperous peasants, farmers and herdsmen were repressed and exiled from the Zaporozhye region of Ukraine to Siberia in the 1940s as political criminals against the Soviet regime. Her father, my great-grandfather, Ivan Smakovsky was shot. Her mother Smakovska Avdotya was left alone with 4 small children. The fate of my grandmother's family was difficult, all her life she dreamed of returning to her homeland in Ukraine.
In the painting I depicted the pain of my family. On the turquoise sky of my Ukraine, the enemy is approaching with a red bloody stain, filling all the beauty of the Ukrainian land with pain and death. I painted bombs exploding in gold gilded metal.
I have many friends now in Ukraine whom
I keep in touch with every day. Every day I feel their pain with my soul and I am slowly dying.
