  • I loved you (Joseph Brodsky)

I loved you once — the love still (it may happen
that simply pain) is drilling on my brain.
All’s freaking gone to pieces; all in vain.
I’ve tried to shoot myself; alas, a weapon
Is hard to find. And next: where do I aim?
Left temple? Right? Tremor’s no handicap, but
Thoughtfulness is. Damn, here we go again!

I loved you hopelessly, deep inside burning,
As may God grant by others — but He won’t! —
That guy up there, for his creations known,
    Won’t conjure twice — Parmenides confirming —
That big-boned cracking, heat to fingertips,
Melting the fillings in your yap with yearning
    To finally touch — I strike out «hips» —
    the lips!
