In Before Dusk, water becomes most elusive at the moment when daylight begins to withdraw. Pale gold reflections stretch across deep blues and greens, while submerged stones remain visible beneath a surface that continually interrupts and reshapes them. Transparency and reflection coexist, making it difficult to determine where depth ends and surface begins.
Valeria Ocean builds the composition around this instability. Reflected forms twist into fluid, almost biomorphic shapes; some briefly suggest faces or fragments of figures before dissolving back into water. Rather than defining these accidental images, the artist leaves them unresolved, allowing perception itself to become part of the work.
Within the CALM series, Before Dusk explores the threshold between activity and rest. The water has not yet become still, but its movement is slowing and the light is losing intensity. The painting captures calm not as emptiness, but as a gradual surrender of certainty—a moment when the visible world becomes quieter, less fixed, and increasingly open to memory and imagination.
