RUSSIAN ARTISTS
AGAINST WAR
2023 - April, 30
In the spring of 2023, Manhattan hosted the exhibition “Russian Artists Against War”, organized by a community of Russian artists with the support of Artseeker Gallery. This event was not merely an art show, but a manifesto — a call for peace, humanity, and cultural dialogue.
The central idea of the exhibition was the affirmation of peace as a core value. The artists explored the fragility of the world and the human condition, as well as the role of art as a healer of the soul in times of emotional turmoil. The works addressed vulnerability and defenselessness in today’s world, the artist as both witness and voice of society, and art as a space for inner healing and the search for hope.
The project included painting, photography, and multimedia, bringing together more than a dozen artists. Their aim was to offer viewers warmth and humanity, opposing the chaos of war with the language of art.
One of the central works was the piece “What Illusion do you choose?”, in which the artist’s body became a metaphor for the world’s fragility. By interacting with images of sky and clouds, viewers found themselves faced with a choice: to destroy or to preserve, to protect or to reject.
Other works turned to the symbolism of nature, urban landscapes, and mythological motifs. Their metaphorical and multilayered visual language allowed difficult themes to be expressed through the poetry of color, texture, and imagery.
The exhibition was curated by Artseeker Gallery (Brooklyn, New York) with the involvement of its founders:
-
Victoria Isaeva — artist and art dealer, who founded Artseeker after the outbreak of war as a platform to support Russian artists in exile.
-
Ivan Pestryakov — social activist and entrepreneur, advocating for cultural dialogue and against military aggression.
